PRE MATCH: Newell’s are famous for their pyrotechnic displays. Fans often gather pre match with their flares and fireworks in the Parque Independencia close to the Plaza Independiente Newell and Avenida Pellegrini.
HISTORY IN A NUTSHELL: Newell’s Old Boys were founded on 3rd November 1903 and are named after Isaac Newell, an Englishman considered to be one of the pioneers of Argentine football. The inspiration for the clubs’ colours are taken from both the English and German flags. In 1939 Newell’s joined the Argentinian Primera Division for the first time having played in the Liga Rosarina prior to this. They have lifted the Primera Division title on 6 occasions.
DID YOU KNOW?: Newell’s nickname, The Lepers, arises from when Newell’s agreed to play a charity match in the 1920s for victims of Leprosy but their rivals Rosario central refused to take part. Newell’s Old Boys is also Lionel Messi’s hometown club.
TOP TIPS: Guided tours of the stadium are available on non-match days. It is possible to visit Rosario on a day trip from Buenos Aires. A large number of buses regularly depart from Retiro and Liniers coach stations in Buenos Aires. The journey time, however, is 4 hours each way.
The stadium is situated in Parque Independencia and is approximately a 30 minute walk from the centre of Rosario. Alternatively bus number 153 departs every 10 minutes from the corner of Corrientes and Codoba streets and takes you to the stadium in 16 minutes.
