HISTORY IN A NUTSHELL: Independiente were founded in 1904 and Joined the AFA in 1906. They lifted their first league title in 1922 and three years later moved to the Avellaneda neighbourhood on the outskirts of Buenos Aires where they still play today. They are one of the 'Big Five' teams in Argentina and have won the league on 16 occasions. They are known as 'The King of the Cups' due to their success in cup competitions. They have won the Copa Libertadores seven times (more than any other team) and the Copa Sudamericana twice. 

 

DID YOU KNOW?: In 2011 they sold Sergio Aguero for a record 20 million euros to Atletico Madrid. The money from the transfer helped redevelop their current stadium.
